Initiation

Occasionally, students may demonstrate reduced initiation of skill development. There may be many reasons that a student may present this way. For example, they may identify as being shy, may prefer to learn more passively due to a fear of making a mistake or having reduced self-efficacy in a skill. This tool can be used to help students identify areas for skill development, increase self-awareness, and promote initiation of skill development.

Directions: Either, separately or together, have your student complete this document as a professional development plan for skill development. The fieldwork educator may need to guide the conversation about what areas the student still requires improvement and further skill development. Have your student guide the conversation of what strategies and resources will be beneficial in optimizing their success towards this developmental plan. The goal is to facilitate student self-initiation to implement these strategies and take control of their learning.
